Even if your dog sleeps with you at night, it’s still important to give them their own spot to relax when they need some alone time.

For many dogs, a dog crate works best. Others may prefer a proper dog bed. Both options give dogs a spot to nap and provides a “home base”. Keep their special spot in the room where you spend the most time, and consider getting a bed for your bedroom if you like keeping your dog close.

Best dog beds for small dogs

Little dogs tend to get colder than their larger, furrier counterparts. Try finding a bed for your small dog that has a “nest” so the surrounding cushion keeps them warm and cozy. You can even pick a small dog bed with a snuggly roof.

Best dog beds for big dogs

Big dog beds are usually loose-fill beds. They’re rectangular (or sometimes oval), flat fabric cases filled with any number of stuffing types, similar to bean bags. The downside to these beds is that sometimes their fillings clump together. And if your dog is a chewer, you might want to skip these altogether, unless you want fillings all over your living room. Try one with a memory foam insert instead!

Best outdoor dog beds

If your dog spends a lot of time outside, raised cot-style beds keep them off the cold ground and allows air to circulate under them when it’s hot. Many dogs prefer this type of bed, but because they generally don’t provide much padding, it’s best to save them for young, active dogs without joint pain.
